I’m from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, in the UK.

Where is it?
It’s in the centre of England, about halfway between Manchester and Birmingham.

How big is it?
About 250,000 people live in the city itself but the urban population is about 370,000.

What’s it famous for?
The area is famous for its pottery and ceramics industry, which began there in the 17th century. One of the most famous companies, Wedgwood, has a visitor centre which attracts tourists from all over the world. Stoke City is one of the oldest football clubs in the world and currently plays in the English Premier League.

What are the people like?
They’re generally honest, friendly and hard-working. But many jobs were lost when the pottery, coal and steel industries either closed or moved away and Stoke-on-Trent was given the name ‘the Brexit capital of Britain’ after almost 70% voted to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum.

What’s the local food like?
The oatcake is a local speciality. It’s like a kind of savoury pancake and is usually eaten with things like cheese, bacon and tomatoes.

Are there any famous people who come from the city?
At the moment, the most famous person from Stoke is the singer Robbie Williams. One of the greatest England international football players Sir Stanley Matthews was the first ever European Footballer of the Year in 1956 and famously played until he was 50 years old. Edward Smith, the captain of the Titanic, was also from the city.
